When my younger brother spends hours playing video games, my parents get frustrated and try to convince him to go play an outdoor game. Surely, they hoped he'd like kicking a soccer ball, running track, or shooting hoops.
Alas, he loves killing enemies with his friends in online games. He sits for hours a day, only moving to relieve his bladder. We all know sitting for long periods is not good for health, but on July 7th, a light bulb went off.
Augmented reality games, such as Pokémon GO, make it fun to walk and explore town. I am itching to finish this blog so that I can go outside and try to catch them all. Yesterday I walked for 75 minutes, I hope I beat that today. Typically my daily walk is 30-45 minutes, or as long as it takes to listen to my new podcasts for the day on 2x speed.
Official prediction: augmented reality will help people get out of their chairs while gaming and instead engage in active gaming. Here's to decreasing sitting time, increasing daily steps, increasing cardio, decreasing obesity, and a healthier generation for our children and ourselves.
